Oil storage tanks of steel and plastic, made to the appropriate British Standard or Oftec Standard are very robust and, when properly installed, will last for very many years. However, fuel storage and its associated pipework needs to be monitored annually for security and safety by an expert technician.

Maskell Heating Services offer a comprehensive GOLD or SILVER Maintenance Service all for a one off annul fee.

If you choose our SILVER Maintenance Service we will carry out the following:

  • Water dip the tank (water is caused by condensation that will gather at the lower part of your tank, if this is not removed this can cause poor boiler/aga performance)
  • Supply and fit a new sight gauge if you have a single tank. It is not only beneficial for you to see how much oil is in the tank but also the oil delivery driver, so not to cause a spill(if you have a bunded tank you are no longer allowed to use a sight gauge)
  • Change the filter or filters (the maintenance covers the replacement of one filter, if more than one a further charge will be made).
  • Check the entire tank over making sure all the lids and ancillary equipment are not damaged and are complete.
  • Check any inspection hatches fitted to make sure there are no leaks.
  • If you have a bunded tank, check the bund for any oil/water.
  • Make sure the base of the tank is in good order.

If you choose to become one of our GOLD Maintenance Service customers, you will benefit from all of the above as well as the following:

  • Annual news letter keeping you up to date with the latest news, any change in regulations, equipment, special offers ETC.
  • We will cut back any foliage that has grown up around the tank installation (all cuttings to be disposed of on site).
  • Weed kill the area around the tank if required, with pet friendly chemicals.
  • Test the Watchman and the strength of the battery.

After the maintenance has been carried out, an essential item is the fire valve(s) on the supply line, not only checking to make sure you have the correct fire valve but to make sure it is in working order. The fire valve must be located externally at the point where the oil line comes into the building. If you have an out side boiler the fire valve should be positioned 1 metre away from the point of entry of the supply line.

Maintenance is an essential part of a tank installation, not only to prevent problems with the tank and deliveries to the tank, but to prevent poor performance with the boiler/aga and costly extra service charges. Also if you were to have any problems with the tank and need to claim on the manufactures guarantee, it would be of an advantage to show that the tank has been look after and maintained regularly
